All About Blackjack

The game of blackjack is easy to learn, but difficult to master. It is a very popular card game, and a favorite of many players, because it requires a lot of skill to play well.

Blackjack is also known as 21, and ‘Pontoon’. The game reached new heights of popularity in 2008 following the release of the film ’21′, which told the story of a team of card-counters who were able to win millions at casinos around the USA.

Before you rush to log on to an online casino and try to replicate their story, read on to learn more about the game.

One of the first written references to Blackjack dates back to the early 17th century, where a game very similar to Blackjack was mentioned in a story written by Miguel de Cervantes – the author of Don Quixote. It is possible that Blackjack was being played in Castila even before the 17th century.

Blackjack spread through France and Spain very quickly. When the game reached the USA, however, it did not catch on very quickly, and casinos had to try to tempt players with bonus payouts and other incentives. One such payout was odds of 10-1 on a ‘Blackjack’ – a hand containing only the Ace of Spades and a Black Jack. The bonus is no longer paid in most casinos, but the name of the game lives on.

Blackjack is just one of the casino card games offered, but is a very popular game. Before you start playing, try a few games in the freeplay section, and make sure you are familiar with all the rules – remember that there are some house rules that differ depending on the casino that you are playing at.
